Chapter 7
When Crystal awoke that morning, Kendrick was still asleep. She kissed him on the forehead and got out of bed. She went into the bathroom, washed her face, and brushed her teeth before going downstairs to the kitchen. She put the coffee in the coffee maker and looked in the refrigerator to see what to make for breakfast. She decided on an omelet with cheese, mushrooms, and sundried tomatoes with a side of turkey bacon. Crystal began taking the food out of the refrigerator and then she turned on the radio. She loved to listen to Steve Harvey in the morning on WDAS-FM radio. Crystal wanted this to be a special breakfast since this was the first time he had spent the night at her house. In her book, she was stepping up. While preparing the food, her phone rang. She looked at the incoming call and saw that it was her mother. She took a deep breath and answered it.
“Hey, Mom.”
“Hey, where you been? I haven’t talked to you in a while,” she said.
“I’ve been working, Mom. You know I’ve been at the university since August.”
“I know that. So since you’re working you can’t call? How is work?”
“It’s great. Things are going rather well actually.”
Crystal’s mother hesitated because she knew that tone and answer too well. She looked at the phone hoping she was wrong about what she was thinking but she doubted it.
“And why are things so great?” she asked with a hint of disgust in her voice.
“If you promise to not get so uptight and judgmental I’ll tell you.”
“You know me. I’m gonna speak my mind. So what is it?”
“I met someone and we’re getting serious.”
“Oh, ok. Who is he?” she asked.
“He’s a professor and head of the English department.”
“Sounds good. Is he married?”
“Why do you automatically go there, Mom? Why do you think everyone I mess with is married?”
“Yeah, he’s married. You still haven’t learned yet, have you? Messing around with married men only gets you hurt. When they’re done with you they leave you and go home to the wife. You’re the one left holding the bag.”
“Well, Mom, it’s different this time. He cares for me. I can tell.”
Crystal’s mother let out a chuckle. She thought her daughter had learned her lesson from the last relationship she was in but she could see that she hadn’t. For the life of her, she didn’t understand why her daughter, a smart and beautiful woman, settled for married men. It was very disheartening.
“Do you remember how you thought the last married man was different? How many times are you going to put yourself through this?”
“I’m sure this is the last time. And, Mom, I’m in a good space today and I don’t want to argue or have any kind of conflict. Can we just drop it?”
“Okay, but before we do, you say this man is the head of the English department where you work? “
“Yes, why, Mom?”
“No reason. I just want you to be careful. I’m tired of seeing you make these bad choices.
